An evergreen,
shrubby, perennial herb up to 80cm high with a woody base,
soft, silver, oval leaves and a mass of deep blue or violet
flowers. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation
of the dried leaves. A so-called oleo resin is also produced
from the exhausted plant material. Sage or common sage is a
herb of ancient repute, valued as a culinary and medicinal
plant, it was called a sacred herb by the Romans. It was
believed to strengthen the senses and the memory, and
helpful for inflammations of the mouth, tongue, and throat. |

Oral toxin
(due to thujone). Arbortifacient; avoid in pregnancy. Avoid
