The mints are some of the best known essential oils in aromatherapy. Mint was prescribed by Greek an Roman herbalists for just about everything. Peppermint is probably the most favorite member of the mint family.  It stimulates, refreshes, cools, and uplifts the mind and body.  It is excellent for tired feet and for reducing the effects of travel sickness.Peppermint repels insects, mice and rats. Peppermint is toxic for cats and dogs.

Botanical Name: Mentha piperita
Origin: Europe and Asia.  Today in the United States and England.
Fragrance: Fresh, bright and minty.
Therapeutic Properties:

Antiseptic, antiviral, expectorant. Diaphoretic, aromatic, carminative, chologogue (stimulates flow of bile), stomachic, calmative, mild alterative, stimulant, rubefacient, nervine, analgesic

Uses:

Dizziness, headaches, tension, digestive disorders, nausea, vomiting, influenza, colds, sore muscles, bruises, muscle pain, rheumatism, joint pain, insect bites, motion sickness, tightness in the neck. Acne, blemished skin, tired or swollen skin. Mental fatigue, lack of concentration, confusion, lapse of  memory.

Blends Well with: Benzoin, basil, pine, geranium tea tree, grapefruit, juniper,niaouli, rosemary, lavender, marjoram, lemon, eucalyptus, and other mints.
Cautions:  May cause skin irritation dilute to 1% in carrier oil and use no more than 3 drops in bath..  Do not use on infants and small children.  People with hay fever should avoid mint oil since it may irritate mucous membranes.  Oil is toxic if taken internally in large doses; causes dermatitis.  Avoid prolonged use of the essential oil as an inhalant. Peppermint can reduce milk flow; take internally with caution if breast-feeding.
